The CLU designation is Canada’s premier wealth transfer and estate planning designation. The CLU designation is recognized in the financial services industry, and is respected by clients. This program is designed to provide industry professionals with the knowledge and skills that will provide them with the confidence to provide their clients with wealth transfer, and estate planning advice.
Students who successfully complete the required courses, and meet the conditions prescribed by The Institute for Advanced Financial Education, will receive a certificate and be conferred the title and designation of Chartered Life Underwriter (CLU).
The Financial Industry is committed to excellence and in order to ensure that these professionals’ knowledge and skillset is up to industry standards, professionals are required to accumulate Continuing Education hours. The CLU program will help individuals fulfill their Continuing Education Credits. The Advocis Continuing Education Website provides more information.

Credentials Awarded
Students who have successfully completed the CFP® program with Advocis or any other provider recognized by the CLU Institute, may enrol in the three CLU-specific courses without having to write or pass either the CFP® exam or the Advocis CFP Comprehensive Exam.
Format
The CLU program is made up of 3 different courses (CLU 235, CLU 236, and CLU 237). Each course is a total of 27 hours taught over 4 days, consisting of interactive classroom sessions that are 6 hours in duration. All courses have a final exam. Individuals must enrol in each course as it is offered. Individuals must successfully pass all three courses and exams in order to be awarded their Chartered Life Underwriter Designation.
In order to enrol in the Chartered Life Underwriter program individuals must have completed the CFP Core Curriculum.

Course Descriptions
CLU 235 Advanced Taxation
In addressing client needs and objectives, financial advisers must be aware of the impact that income tax regulations have on financial and estate planning. This course provides important information on income tax rules and regulations that affect individuals, partners and company owners and financial advisers.
CLU 236 Law
This course is designed to provide financial advisers with practical information on the laws of the various jurisdictions that affect their practice. The course provides examples of the operation of the law on financial advisers’ affairs and their relationship with clients and the financial service organizations with which they conduct business.
CLU 237 Applied Estate Planning
This course is the culmination of all of the courses in the CLU program. As such, information presented draws upon the technical knowledge developed in the other courses. The emphasis in this course is on the application of the knowledge gained in the other courses and on the planning process rather than just technical details. The program is designed to assist financial advisers in identifying problems, gathering comprehensive data and planning integrated solutions, essential components in their clients’ financial and estate planning.
