MELAB

1) What does the test achieve?

MELAB stands for Michigan English Language Assessment Battery. It is an advanced-level battery (or group) of English language proficiency tests. It is for adult non-native speakers of English who will need to use English for academic purposes at the college and university level.

2) Who takes the test?

MELAB is mainly for students who are applying to universities in the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom, where the language of instruction is English, and is accepted as evidence of English language proficiency by universities as an alternative to the TOEFL. MELAB is also administered to professionals who will need to use English in their work: for example, to engineers who come to the U.S. for on-site training at large manufacturing companies, etc. MELAB is NOT evidence of certification for purposes to teaching English.

3) What does the test entail?

MELAB is designed to measure your proficiency in the four basic language skill areas: writing, listening, reading, and speaking. The entire MELAB test lasts 2½ to 3½ hours (including check-in at the examination site) and consists of:

  • Part 1: A written composition
  • Part 2: A listening comprehension test
  • Part 3: A multiple choice test containing grammar, close reading, vocabulary, and reading comprehension problems.
  • A speaking test (OPTIONAL)

The speaking test is not automatically included in every MELAB administration. It is required for some professional certification programs and for applicants to The University of Michigan. If you are applying at the graduate level to a university in the United States and want to be considered for a teaching assistantship in order to receive financial aid it is strongly recommended that you include the speaking test in your MELAB test. The speaking test may not be taken separately. It may be taken only in conjunction with the written MELAB Exam.
The speaking test is available at Ashton College.

Candidates who intend on becoming Certified Immigration Consultants must score a minimum of 83 per category and have a speaking test score of 3.

4) How much does it cost?

$150 with speaking test
$100 without speaking test
