Crossing the Canada-US border

In case you cannot get a flight directly into Canada and instead land in the United States , you can cross the Canada-US border with you passport. If you enter the US at an airport near the border, you can take a Greyhound Bus to cross the border into Canada (for more information go to www.greyhound.com ). Depending on your location you may need to take a taxi to a Greyhound station.

Tips for International Students

  • Keep you passport, any important documents, currency (cash or otherwise) in your carry-on and not in luggage you check-in.
  • It is safer to carry traveler's cheques and only some cash in varying denominations. In this situation, if your traveler's cheques are misplaced or stolen you can contact your bank and cancel them - without losing actual money since traveler's cheques require your signature to be validated.
  • Your traveler's cheques and cash should be in Canadian and US currencies. Most places in Canada (along the border) accept American dollars. This also means that if you land in the US you have the monetary means to take a bus to enter Canada .
  • Make a checklist of all items you will need to take with you.
  • Make sure you have enough funds to live in Canada and for a return ticket.
