Skilled workers are in short supply

Manpower Canada reports that nearly one in three Canadian employers has difficulty filling skilled job openings.

The latest survey found that 31 per cent of employers across Canada are finding it more difficult to fill skilled positions. Among the top 10 skills most in demand were sales representatives, accounting staff, finance graduates, secretaries and other office support staff.

James Knight, President of the Association of Canadian Community Colleges, recently told a Commons Industry Committee that 42 per cent of the skill shortages are in occupations that usually require college or apprenticeship training compared with just seven per cent that require university education.
