A massive rockfall crashed onto the Sea to Sky Highway, about half a kilometre north of Porteau Cove between Furry Creek and Lions Bay just before midnight Tuesday night fortunately missing any passing vehicles.

The area of damage covers the highway more than 10 metres deep along a 100-metres stretch, by some estimates. An estimated 16,000 cubic metres of rock fell onto the highway, which is the only direct route between Whistler and Vancouver. Those wishing to get back to Vancouver need to take the scenic route via Lilooet, adding considerable driving time time their schedule, not to mention the extra gas.
I hate to think of the potential fatalities had this happened just a few hours earlier with so many people on vacation travelling to and from Whistler or Squamish.
Efforts to clear the Sea to Sky Highway are well underway and a geotechnical engineer says work appears to be on schedule for now and a Monday reopening is still a possibility.

So much for going to Whistler for the long weekend!
