Benazir Bhutto, the former Prime Minister of Pakistan and daughter of former Prime Minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, was assassinated on December 27, 2007 at an election rally in Rawalpindi, Pakistan. Ms. Bhutto leaves behind her husband and three children.

After shooting Ms. Bhutto in the neck and chest, the killer blew himself up and killed 20 other people in the process. Ms. Bhutto sustained injury to the head, when she tried to duck into her car after the gun fire, this is injury is believed to be the cause of her death.

Ms. Bhutto was laid to rest in her family tomb amid scenes of mass grieving. Her supporters have been rioting and accusing the government and President Pervez Musharaff for this incident.

Pakistan believes that the attack was plotted by al-Qaeda, specifically Baitullah Mehsud. Mehsud is a wanted pro-Taleban militant leader from the South Waziristan region.

Bhutto was the first woman elected to lead a Muslim state.
